Founded in 1995, Dance>Detour is a professional “diverse-abilities” dance company. Our work is
dedicated exclusively to the art of integrated dance and collaborations that include dancers with and
without disabilities who explore movement possibilities together as EQUALS. Only about 25 such dance
companies exist; we are Chicago’s first! Through creative and ground-breaking dance performances,
workshops and lecture demonstrations, Dance>Detour provides the public at large the opportunity to see
that performers with disabilities EXIST and have important contributions to make to the arts.
Dance>Detour grounds its work in the diversity of its dancers by celebrating their physical, ethnic,
generational, cultural and artistic differences; it is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation. Over the past ten
years, Dance>Detour has paved a new path in Chicago as a company that embraces the philosophy that
“Everyone Can Dance” regardless of their individual and varying range of physical abilities. Our varied
repertoire embraces many forms of dance from classical – to jazz – to modern – to African which appeal
to audiences of all ages and backgrounds.
